Statuses & Reactions

Whatever the Tactical Status, a unit suffers the following penalties: Disordered charge; combat Initiative of 1; neither controls nor contests objectives and no "Stationary" benefit.

Pinned

  • Cannot Move, Rush or Charge, in any phase.
  • If in combat: normal pile-in moves, but cannot Pursue or Disengage.

Suppressed

  • Must make all of its Shooting Attacks as Snap Shots.

Stunned

  • Cannot declare any Reactions. The unit takes the punishment without being able to respond.

Routed

  • All the penalties of the other statuses.
  • In the Movement Phase: must Fall Back during the Rout Sub-phase if it includes Routed models, unless it is Locked in Combat.
  • If it reaches the table edge: Leadership test. Failed = Removed as a Casualty. Passed = loses "Routed" and becomes Suppressed.

All players have 1 Reaction available by default. The number of Reactions available increases with the Points Limit. Up to 1500 points: nothing; 1501-3500: +1 Reaction; 3501 - 5000: +2 Reactions; >5000: +3 Reactions.

Some rules grant additional Reactions, for example the Primary Detachment of the Legiones Astartes, Legio Custodes, Solar Auxilia, Questoris Knight, and the 'Master of the Legion' rule (Praetor, certain characters).

Opponent's Movement Phase

RepositionMovement

When an enemy unit comes within 12": an immediate move up to the unit's Initiative. Useful for taking cover or improving your position.

Opponent's Shooting Phase

Return FireShooting

The targeted unit fires back in turn — even models that are about to die take part.

Shield WallShooting/Charge

Legiones Astartes Advanced Reaction, costs 1 Reaction Allotment. Declared at the start of step 3 of a Shooting Attack, or step 4 of a Charge (volley attacks), made by the opponent. If the majority of models in the targeted unit have the Shield trait: +1 Toughness for the rest of the phase.

SmokescreenShooting

Legiones Astartes Advanced Reaction, costs 1 Reaction Allotment. Declared at the start of step 3 of a Shooting Attack made by the opponent. If the majority of models in the targeted unit have the Smokescreen trait: Shrouded (5+) Damage Mitigation roll for the rest of the phase, against wounds, penetrating hits and glancing hits.

Medic!Shooting

Legiones Astartes Advanced Reaction, costs 1 Reaction Allotment. Declared at step 9 of a Shooting Attack targeting a unit that includes a Medic. When removing casualties (step 11): one recovery roll for each model that has suffered an unsaved wound (except models that themselves have "Medic").

Opponent's Assault Phase

OverwatchAssault

The charged unit shoots normally with all its weapons at the unit charging it. However, the attacker gets no Cover Saves or Shrouded Damage Mitigation.

EvadeAssault

After the charge's volley attacks: the unit dodges away with a move up to its Initiative.

Heroic InterventionAssault

A character issues a Challenge (see The Challenge page).

Special Reactions

InterceptReserves

Snap Shots at an enemy unit that has just arrived from Reserves (a vehicle only uses its defensive weapons).

Death or GloryVehicle

To stop a vehicle that is "moving through" your unit (base to base): one model (not necessarily in contact) shoots OR strikes in melee. All its attacks hit automatically; Wound Tests are made against the Front Armour. If the vehicle is destroyed or Pinned: the model survives and the vehicle inflicts no hits as it passes. Otherwise, the model is Removed as a Casualty.

NullifyPsychic

When a Resistance Check against a psychic Curse is failed: a model with the Psyker trait and Line of Sight to the target unit (or to the Curse's Focus) may attempt to nullify it. Subtract the Focus's Willpower from our model's Willpower, then make a Willpower Check with the power's modifier. Passed: the Curse fails. Failed: it is resolved normally.
